Unfortunately, socioeconomic status has a major influence on diet quality
One of the objectives of the NutriQuébec project is to gain a better understanding of the diet-related factors that are also associated with health disparities in the Quebec population. NutriQuébec data show that socio-economic status has a major influence on diet quality.
For example, having a lower level of education or income tends to be associated with a poorer-quality diet containing:
- Fewer fruits and vegetables
- More sugar
- More sweetened drinks
These data therefore reinforce the urgency of implementing strategies to facilitate healthy choices among people of lower socioeconomic levels. These include:
- Reduce the price of healthy foods, which often cost more than lower-quality foods
- Increase the availability of healthy foods in places, regions and communities where they are in short supply
- Improve the nutritional quality of foods offered to consumers on the shelves
- Simplify nutritional labelling
Our warmest thanks to everyone involved in the NutriQuébec project. Thanks to you, it is possible to identify these important factors on which we need to act in Quebec to promote better nutrition for all.
